In South Africa, GLP-1 treatment for weight management is generally appropriate for adults who meet one of two markers. The first is a body mass index of 30 or higher, which is the clinical threshold for obesity. The second is a BMI of 27 or higher in someone who also has a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, raised cholesterol, fatty liver, or obstructive sleep apnoea.
Some people are not suitable for GLP-1 treatment regardless of BMI. This includes anyone with a history of pancreatitis, a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2, severe gastrointestinal disease, or anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. Your doctor goes through all of this with you during the consultation.
The screening above gives a quick indication. It is not a diagnosis, and the final decision sits with your doctor after reviewing your bloodwork and history. When you are ready, you can start your full assessment or read more in our FAQs.
